Oliver DeMille says in his book, "A Thomas Jefferson Education" that there are 3 primary goals to Leadership Education. "First, to train thinkers, entrepreneurs and statesmen-individuals with the character, competence and capacity to do the right thing and do it well in business, government, church, school, family and other organizations. The second goal is to perpetuate freedom, to prepare people who know what freedom is, what is required to maintain it, and who exert the will to do what is required. These two goals are accomplished by the third: teaching students how to think. Those who know how to think are able to lead effectively and are able to help society remain free and prosperous." I believe that education needs to be based in truth. We need to know what caused the ruin of past nations so that we can avoid those traps and behaviors. We, as DeMille stated, need to know what is right and have the fortitude and courage to do the right thing even when it's not popular. I would submit that in order to enjoy our freedom, our Leaders need to not only be educated, but they need to be impeccable with their word and have the courage to do the right thing even in the face of opposition.
I do believe we can be these people. I think this class is to help us critically think and begin to learn verified knowledge through research and education. When we start to critically think in an appropriate way we can invite others to do the same and we can all catch fire and watch each other burn. Ignorance is the blind leading to be blind lets not be blind leaders but vetted ones.
I love this statement. What an incredible man he was. I can only imagine what he would have accomplished in today's world.
